between shades of gray essay Sacrifice is the act of giving up something for another's benefit. Ruta Sepetys is the author of the novel, Between Shades of Gray, she creates historical fiction that contains many examples of sacrifice. This essay will focus on the various cases of sacrifice evident in each of the three sections of the novel entitled Thieves and Prostitutes, Maps and Snakes, and Ice and Ashes. The theme of sacrifice is apparent early in the novel. During the end of chapter seven, the NKVD grab Jonas and plan to separate him from the group. Quickly, Elena pulls the NKVD officers aside and using her knowledge of the Russian language, offers him a pocket watch belonging to Kostas. This action brings Jonas back to the group. Lina describes the situation very vividly on page 27. She notes, “Mother pulled a bundle of rubles from her pocket and exposed it slightly to the officer.” The NKVD value material goods more than the feelings of a human being. This leads to Lina’s beliefs that all NKVD officers are savages. Elena makes this sacrifice without a second thought. Lina asks herself what a human life was worth, she recalls, “That morning, my brother’s was worth a pocket watch.” (Sepetys 27). Chapter 21 begins with Lina unable to track how many weeks they had been moving. She says that in the countryside outside of Omsk, they had stopped. There is a small kiosk and Elena exited the train and purchased all sorts of candy, toffees, and cigarettes for those adults. This…
