    SNOMED, the Systemized Nomenclature of Medicine, illustrates an all-inclusive default and validated medical terminology and concept terms for several different classifications which are arranged into nineteen hierarchies. The vocabulary promotes future advancements and supports evidence-based care (IHTSDO, 2016b). It also derives and processes these codes electronically to represent specific terms and concepts (Benson, 2012; Shortliffe & Cimino, 2014a). There were several predecessors before SNOMED CT, the current ontology version, that is utilized today. First came Systemized Nomenclature of Pathology (SNOP) created by pathologists, then SNOMED, and finally SNOMED CT. SNOMED CT evolved from merging Great Britain’s Real Clinical Terms with SNOMED in 1999. However, the merger was not finished until 2002. From 2007, the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization (IHTSDO) has complete ownership over SNOMED CT (Shortliffe & Barnett, 2014; IHTSDO, 2016a). The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization (IHTSDO) is a not-for-profit organization (NIH.gov, 2016b). SNOMED CT is vital in the medical field because the patients, the clinicians and the population on a whole benefit from its usage. There is better communication if this ontology is used within Electronic Health Records (EHRs) amongst all entities involved and information and support are provided in real time.
