George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones series is immensely successful and popular.Using different character perspectives to give view to issues occurring over an intricate fantasy world, he spins a web of several characters lives in a way only J.K. Rowling can match in detail. He draws readers in with a darkly realistic adult fantasy story that is only offset by the sharp wit of the characters as he draws them together across his world into what will be an epic climax. However it is his compelling characters and elaborate backstories that make the character not only memorable but carries what would otherwise be a confusing story. The most important and interesting aspect of Jon Snow’s character is his upbringing as Lord Eddard Stark’s illegitimate son. Although he looks like a true Stark with his dark brown hair and grey eyes so dark they could almost be black, Jon is constantly reminded that he is not a Stark and learns to stand alone. It is this upbringing, raised as only half a Stark by a man who does not believe in moral compromises and strongly in the idea of duty, that creates Jon’s internal struggle throughout the series; duty or love? It is this internal struggle that diminished other’s views of his simplicity as a character, adding a complexity caused by his backstory. This choice of duty over love causes Jon to struggles to uphold his vows to the Night’s Watch often, having sworn the oath stating: Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my…

However, Visenya makes a critical decision-marking one of the more progressive “policies” for Westeros. She picks Knights from all social stratums. In a society with little upward mobility, this new possibility gives the poorest of boys hope to better their positions in life. Over time, The Kingsguard created a new paradigm for the ‘True Knight’ [Bran] had asked Lord Eddard if the Kingsguard were…

The Wall's Night's Watch, whom Martin describes as "criminal scum who are also heroes and they wear black", was a deliberate twist on fantasy stereotypes. Furthermore, the use of black as the identifying color for the essentially good Night's Watch and the use of white for the much corrupted Kingsguard is another example of Martin subverting traditional fantasy which tends to link light colors with good and darker ones with evil. As any universally adored or hated fictional characters are too…

As she wandered the banks of the Tridents Ford, stepping over corpses, lost in a daze; she thought about the glory days and also being thrown back into reality by one of her many sworn swords she had brought with her to recover the bodies of the dead loyalist. She thought of how great of a king Aegon could've been had he lived and she groomed him to do so. She thought of his namesake...all of…

show your power would probably garner a heavy penalty. Maggy was right, it wasn’t the best idea for Cersei to get her future told: her husband-King is gonna be a philanderer, her children will have golden hair (incest, anyone?) and wear golden death shrouds (harsh, Mag). Cut to now, Cersei and Jamie having a private moment before their dear old dad’s funeral. Jamie’s worried about keeping their enemies at bay now that the Great and Mighty Tywin is gone, but Cersei’s all about berating Jamie…

relationships are riddled with abuse. The majority of his relationships are with his family members, all of which have sworn fealty to their King Joffrey. This imbalance of power gives Joffrey’s relationships a slant in his favor. He can essentially do or have whatever pleases with little to no conflict, except with his mother Cersei who still has some control over her son. Joffrey uses this power over his family to be not only physically abusive but emotionally as well. In abusive…

An example from the text on how characters manipulate others to get their way would be the climax of one plot in the first book of the series, “A Game of Thrones”. Petyr Baelish has a long and intriguing conversation with Catelyn Stark, Ned Stark, the current Hand-of-the-King and Lord of Winterfell’s wife. (“A Game of Thrones” Chapter 88) He talks with her about how he will help to secure their family’s safety because Tyrion was captured by House Stark as a suspect in the attempted murder of…

translations keep the parallel structure, but there are several delicate differences perfect the second version. “我这一生就是一场对侏儒的审判” failed to demonstrate his resentments and grievances. The second version, however, was done with the “因此而受到审判” showing his condemnation of fate. Although the first version is also the parallelism sentence, but less "倒" "更" to intuitively show emotion step by step to reach the vertex. (Winterfell). The kingdom is immense, sparsely populated, with numerous forests, plains, and small settlements. There are two topographical precincts: The Neck to the south that holds Moat Cailin - a massive fortress held by the Freys, and The Wall to the north. The region is freezing cold with occasional snowfall even in summer. Their winters and summers last several years, thereby making winter a very harsh and dangerous season. Hence the phrase oft repeated by the Starks – “Winter is Coming”…
