Tony Licosati Goyette Digital Photo Essay 6 October 2015 Life and Legacy of Yousuf Karsh Yousuf Karsh was an Armenian–Canadian portrait photographer who lived from December 23, 1908 to July 13, 2002. He is said to be "one of the greatest portrait photographers of the twentieth century, who achieved a distinct style in his theatrical lighting". Yousuf Karsh was born in Mardin, a city in east Turkey. He grew up during the Armenian Genocide, witch was when the Ottoman Government was trying to get rid of the Armenian minorities in their Empire during World War I. When he turned sixteen, his parents sent him to Quebec, Canada to live with his Uncle, George Nakash, who would later help Yousuf learn to take pictures. After living with his uncle for a while, Yousuf started working with photographer, John Powls, in his studio. When Powls retired in 1933, Karsh took over the studio and began doing his own work. Many famous people realized how good Karsh was at taking photos that they all wanted one. This led him to take one of his most famous photos, his picture of Winston Churchill. The image of Churchill brought Karsh international prominence, and is claimed to be the most reproduced photograph in history. In 1998, Karsh moved to Boston and on July 13, 2002, aged 93, he died at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital after complications following surgery. Part of Karsh's success as a photographer may be because of the respect by most of his subjects. Karsh's brother Malak said his…
