I will be taking my family (mother, father, and brother) to Kentucky to visit Mammoth Cave National Park. We went one year when I was 4, but I don’t remember anything. This will be a nice chance for our family to catch up and spend some time together before I go off to college. We will drive there using I-30 and I-40, stopping overnight in Memphis, Tennessee. It is a 755-mile journey and since we will be driving a Prius, we can count on 50 mpg on the highways. The national average gas price today is $2.18/gallon, so it will cost us $32.91 for gas to get there. Of course, there is also some mileage just for finding the hotel or the restaurant you want to go to, so we can round it up to $35.00. When I travel, I like to find local specialties in mom-and-pop restaurants, because we have plenty of chain restaurants in Richardson. We may have to travel a little off…

This book is centered around Dawn Jewel, a 15-year-old girl growing up in Eastern Kentucky. It illustrates the many challenges a young lady growing up in the region would but seems to extremely over exaggerate the issues to the most extreme. The novel is set in a poor community that details bad living conditions and a failing schools system. The novel details Dawn being pressured into doing drugs before school, skipping school, fighting, and stealing cars. These details are exactly what I think…
