The purple marks can be correlated to Kaposi sarcoma, an infection related to immunodeficiency that marks an HIV/AIDS diagnosis. Some of the literature describing the experience of HIV/AIDS patients insinuates that the first occurrence of these red and pink lesions is something akin to a death sentence. Kaposi sarcoma are visible indications of an infection related to immunodeficiency; once they appear, it is very much a red flag for what’s to come. There is no way of getting around these colors and the fate they hold. His sudden desire to visit and communicate with his mother coupled with the revelation of these lesions at the story’s end hints that he acknowledges this fate as well.
