Hawaiians greatly valued their land, and through their resistance stated that the stones, or in other words the land, would be the only things they need to survive in the world. This literature of the Pacific, like many others, not only describe the social conflict that tested them, but also are able to inspire a multitude of people towards a common solution. Another piece of Pacific literature that encompasses social conflict would be the poem “Uluhaimalama” by Mahealani Perez Wendt (39). Mahealani was born in Lawai, Kauai and currently resides on Maui. She received her first writing award at the Kamehameha Schools for girls in 1965 and with regards to Hawaiian history, has along history with Politics. In 2007 she published her most popular work, Uluhaimalama. This supports the thesis because of the meaning to the stories Kaona or hidden meaning. The story speaks not only about the hardships the Hawaiians faced, but also their ability to remain determined “in dark places”. In Hawaiian history, Queen Lili’uokalani was tasked with many difficult conflicts and events, one being the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
