When Kamehameha was little, he was involved in a prophecy where it was alleged that Kamehameha was going to kill all of the ali’i who ruled over the Hawaiian Islands. Kamehameha was in grave danger, for Alapa`i wanted the boy dead before the prophecy could start to unravel. So in efforts to keep their son safe, Kamehameha’s parents proceeded to call their son Paiea, instead of Kamehameha, so that Alapa`i and his spies would have to end up postponing their plans kill their son. After getting older, Alapa`i got word that Kamehameha was still alive, so he accepted Kamehameha back, and raised him, and let him have the status of a young ali`i.
