Five individuals belonging to different socioeconomic, gender and social groups, are thrown together in a school detention class where they have already formed proceptions of each other are based their outgrouper status. The opening scenes of the movie illustrates this through conversation among these individuals about what groups they belong to and that the others would not be accepted or in some cases want to be accepted into each other’s groups. Labels associated with their individual group are used to address each other instead of names reinforcing proceptions of outgrouper status. As an example, the Character, John Bender, addresses Molly Ringwald, who plays Claire, as Prom Queen. Claire in turn calls Judd Nelson whom plays John Bender, Burner, referencing that he gets high all the time by smoking marijuana with his friends. Each character classified into an outgroup and assigned those attributes by the world and the other characters in the movie. The princess, athlete, criminal, brain, and basket case all have already formed proceptions of each other as the class begins. As the class progresses and their interaction increases the students start to unknowing challenge their proceptions of each other that may have contributed to errors made about one another, known as perception checking.
