Screening: The Third Man (1949): Directed by Carol Reed, this black and white film had exceptionally articulate visuals of landscapes throughout the city of Vienna in 1948. In spite of being for the most part shot around evening time and in the sewers, the director does an incredible job capturing the overall character of the city. The music was fairly interesting, and added a feeling of peculiarity to the film. Although all the actors played their roles, respectively, Orson Welles was my favorite. He was Charming, but yet evil at the same time. Joseph Cotten played Holly Martins and played it exceptionally well as he was really unconscious of what inconvenience he was getting his character 's part into. He was determined, but at the same…

God’s and Generals depiction of Civil War On November 19, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address after the ending of the Gettysburg War, which ended the Civil War as a whole. It can be said that the Civil War erupted due to the disagreement between states as it relates to slavery. The Gettysburg War was fought between the Union (the North) and the Confederates (the South). The Union wanted to do away with slavery and let African Americans have choices on where, how, and who…
car door. My aunt began to cry. “I’ve had so many bad dreams about you. I was worried you wouldn’t return,” she said. “I’m alive and well,” I said, “Merry Christmas.” As we went inside the house, Uncle Galway and I carried the food. Mom and Aunt Claudia gave us directions on where to set it in the kitchen. Then, we went into the living room and watched the movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” staring Jimmy Stewart. After the movie, we ate dinner. Uncle Galway was less talkative than I remembered.…
seven commandments, warning the animals to not partake in human actions such as wearing clothes and sleeping in beds. Old Major is a character that can represent two historical figures, Karl Marx and Lenin. Karl Marx called for workers to unite against their capitalist oppressor, similar to how Old Major called for the animals to rebel against Jones. Lenin was the leader of the Bolsheviks Party in its successful October 1917 revolution against the czarist regime, Old major was in a sense the…
The Use of Darkness in Characterization in “Heart of Darkness” Through Imperialism In many great works of literature, the use of darkness and insanity in characterization was often used in a fictional matter. However, there is nothing fictional about the darkness that had spread through Africa’s deepest roots as a result of imperialism. This alone had set the primal continent back several hundred years behind the rest of the world in terms of technology and development. Lacking an advanced…
The voice of the winner is the one who tells history, but often times there are many important perspectives that get left out. In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness many such voices are forgotten and ignored. Most obviously the natives, but one particular group is swept even further to the side in this novel. That group is the feminine perspective. Throughout the novel there is an overall lack of appearance by women. When they are included in a scene their thoughts are hardly heard, and if they…
For decades, the United States population had an overreaching fear of communism, and were afraid that it could take over America. Although hatred for communists began as early as the 1910’s and 1920’s, it was the most intense during the period of the Cold War, which lasted from 1949 to 1989 . It was considered a period of extreme dishonesty and disloyalty, as Americans who may have been innocent were accused of aiding the Soviet Union. The main leader of these manhunts for disloyal citizens was…
Racism is a difficult trait to define, and to recognize. It is often hard to decipher what is actually racist, and what just comes across as such. Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness is the story of one man’s account of being an ivory transporter, down the Congo River. During the voyage, there are many encounters with African Natives, and many of those encounters reflect negatively on the natives. The white men who dominate the storyline are demeaning towards the natives, and paint them as being…
