An expression, by word or act, of approbation, regard, confidence, civility, or admiration; a flattering speech or attention; a ceremonious greeting; as, to send one 's compliments to a friend. 2. To praise, flatter, or gratify, by expressions of approbation, respect, or congratulation; to make or pay a compliment to. A definition of this sort is implying that all compliments are meant to aid individuals in gaining self-confidence in their appearance, accomplishments, and defeats; but compliments do not always get interpreted the same way. Here are a few types of different compliments. THE AMBIGUOUS COMPLIMENT Stuff that 's hidden and murky and ambiguous is scary because you don 't know what it does. – Jerry Garcia The ambiguous compliment suggests two different interpretations that may result in confusion from the individual receiving the compliment. Whether or not the compliment was meant to do this, it sometimes cannot be controlled. If somebody were to tell one, “You look nice today,” how are there two meanings? The individual receiving this compliment may take it as they do not look nice on a daily basis, but today was an exception. The person giving them the compliment probably did not do this intentionally. While this is not always the case, it is an effect that can cause immense confusion and frustration.
