as always told me that these people never cared, it seemed they were concerned about me. My best friend, Gina and I are the youngest ones of the group. We have been friends since we were nine years old, she has also been neglected by her parents. We are neighbors and she has always helped me through the rough patches of growing up. Gina glanced over at me, “Terminar de comer, tenemos que darnos prisa si vamos a ponernos al día. Y limpia tus zapatos.” I look down at my shoes, they’re covered with dust as if I rolled in dirt. A jacket I have never worn before, my hands covered with blisters. My pants are rugged, ripped, and torn. I only have $500 dollars left in my pocket. I would prefer to spend my money in America rather than here. As I got up, Coyote entered the room. I stare at the scar across his face, seeing my fear in front of me. I fear every day that if I were to be caught, would I get a scar like that? Are they brutal to all immigrants that they’ve caught? I back away, giving him space to show my respect. He smiles knowing, that I don’t completely trust him. “Señoritas, cruzaremos la frontera a las nueve de la noche. Reúna todo y esté preparado para cualquier cosa.” The words echoed in my mind, We will cross the border tonight. As I get up from the couch, I scan through the apartment to make sure I have everything. Okay, do I have my extra shoes? Check. Jacket? Check. Money? Check. Mis tacos fritos? Check. Identification? Check. My hands are shaking as I tie my…
