Transitions, influenced by interactions with others, enable a person to overcome obstacles that restrain them to transition. Billy Elliot, the film directed by Stephen Daldry, and Jennifer Niven’s novel Holding Up The Universe both explore transitions through defying social standards and acceptance. Billy Elliot explores transitions of Billy entering a world of ballet in the disapproving society of Durham during the Miners Strike. Holding Up The Universe explores the transition of Libby Strout, who was once dubbed as “America’s Fattest Teen”, who returns to school after being homeschooled for years. The barriers the characters experience prevent successful transitions, which ultimately declares that interactions are an ongoing impact to an individual's transition which result in perpetuated change. Without support and encouragement, transitions are difficult to complete. In Billy Elliot, the scene ‘Dance of Defiance’ shows Billy resisting his father. Billy and his best friend Michael are in the gym ‘playing around’ by Billy dancing until Jacky walks into the gym. Billy immediately freezes at the sight of his father. It is clear that Jacky does not support Billy’s decision to choose ballet over his family’s boxing legacy. This is evident earlier in the film where Jacky first finds out about Billy’s ballet lessons. Jacky later says “Lads do football or boxing or wrestling.
