After reading Gee’s definition of discourses many of us develop our own understanding and definition. For me, James Paul Gee theory is not just about the definition of the elements of discourse but, about certain components that present themselves in our everyday life as well in our community. In his introduction “Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics”, Gee brings various aspects to my attention, such as the nine ways that are associated with identity. A rhetorical situation plays an important role in what an author writes in many ways. Rhetorical situations vary depending on who is speaking, who is being spoken to, and what is being spoken about. With that being said, the content of the writing will be significantly different. It is important to recognize the major role that a rhetorical situation, plays in effect to one’s attempt to learn the correct language through enculturating themselves in non-classroom settings. The idea behind writing…

In“Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics: Introduction,” James Paul Gee introduces his readers to the concept of a Discourse with a capital D. Discourses with a capital D according to Gee are “saying (writing)-doing-being-valuing, believing combinations” (6). They are important “combinations”(6). This is for the reason that “identity kits” can help someone see who you are, and they allow you to gain entrance into other Discourses such as a Dominant Secondary Discourse by having the proper make…

James Paul Gee wrote an article “What Video Games have to teach us”. This article shows that just because something is different it does not mean it’s any less valuable. Hands on learning may not be a conventional method of learning, but it doesn’t mean it is any less important. Children who have learning disabilities need the hands on learning that vocational classes offer, because they need to be able to move and manipulate parts to fully understand how something works. “Along with the…

It will not only benefit them, but it would also prove beneficial to them in academic world. The academic discourse requires the writers to have different experiences that relate to the courses. I have found that monolingual writers have trouble being persuasive, where in my experience, multilingual writers are persuasive and better explain their motivations and desires. According to James Paul Gee, a researcher who has worked in psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics,…

apostles in the present-day church. Grudem argued by citing four reasons for ceasing of the ministry of apostles. First, the New Testament scripture replaces apostles. Once scripture was completed there was no need for apostles and hence, no more would be given. Otherwise it makes an open canon. Secondly, he argued that the role of apostles was foundational. He based his argument on Eph. 2:20; 3:5 and Rev. 21:14 that these verses talk about the foundation nature of apostles.…

I say high to everyone and then walk back through the Sasquatch sized door and walk down the hall to the living room. As I enter the room I 'm greeted by a sweet citrusy pine smell that makes the setting complete. I sit down facing the tree looking beyond into the black abyss and twinkling lights. I pull out my grandpas fly fishing book like I do every year. I read the cover, “ The Complete Angler” by James Prosek. Every year I can never seem to finish the book but I get closer every year. This…
