As a part of my engagement assignment I decided to build a connection with a faculty mentor. After reading through the staff listing on the Arizona State website I decided that I wanted to sit down and talk with Professor Gregory Bernstein. I chose Professor Bernstein, because I read in his bio that he had written and sold several scripts. Becoming a writer for television and film is my goal, and the reason I chose to attend ASU, so I was interested to see what advice he could give me about the craft. When I met with Professor Bernstein we discussed how and why he became a writer, what it takes to make and sell a script, and films that we each enjoy. After introducing myself to Professor Bernstein, and telling him a little bit about my background and why I requested the meeting, he answered my questions about why he became and writer and how I can get started. I first asked him why he decided to go to law school at UCLA before becoming a screenwriter, and he told me it was because of his initial fear of failure. This is something I can relate to, and it is good to know that even someone who has sold several scripts had doubts about their ability to do so. He said that I had to overcome the doubts I had, and just go for it. What made Professor Bernstein decide to pursue his dream was the desire to be responsible for bringing joy and entertainment to others. I think this is what screenwriting and filmmaking is all about.
