    Rick Riordan, the well-known author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, was born on June 5, 1964 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born and raised in this city and began writing as a young adult. He wrote short stories, and unsuccessfully submitted a few of those for publication. However, he was not serious about writing until he graduated from college. He received his high school diploma from Alamo Heights High School and, with aspirations of becoming a guitar player, attended North Texas State’s music program. He then, with the intention of studying English and History, transferred to the University of Texas in Austin, then later received his teaching certification in these subjects from the University of Texas in San Antonio. He followed this by teaching English and Social Studies for eight years, at Presidio Hill School, located in San Francisco. On June 5, 1985, Riordan married Becky Riordan. Both had been born on this date, Becky being born 30 minutes earlier. When their two sons were of high school and college age, the family moved from San Antonio to Boston in June 2013. His older son Patrick started college in this city then.
