    The novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding tells the story of man’s inhumanity to man. In the midst of a raging war, a plane evacuating a group of schoolboys from Britain is shot down over a deserted tropical island. The boys elect a leader, hoping for an ounce of leadership and maturity. At first the boys enjoy their freedom, roaming around the island, swimming, and having a good time. Everything works out until the fun gets out of hand. The boys get swept into the world of hunting and gruesome acts and begin to destroy the serenity and beauty of the island. They begin to not only kill and hurt the pigs, but the other children as well. The savage children have no respect for the plants, animals, and other living things on the uninhabited island. While it is clear that the boys destroy the island; additionally, it can be asserted that the island destroys the boys. This tropical paradise gives shelter, fun, food, and drink to the boys when they arrive on the deserted island. The schoolboys do not return the kindness given to them by the island; instead, they destroy it. The young children have no respect for the beauty of the creation and are selfish and greedy for power and excitement. Boys will be boys, but these children are savages. They kill for entertainment and pleasure, not caring if anything or anyone is harmed in the process.
