    Authority figures can entice normal people to take part in aggression, but a group can affect their participation. In the Psychology of Genocide, Massacres, and Extreme Violence, Irving Janis researches the idea of groupthink and how it relates to genocide. He concludes that members of a group will “striv[e] for unanimity” that will “override their motivation for realistic…courses of action” (Dutton, 2007, p. 100). People tend to put blinders on in a group setting and lose the ability to think straight. Thus, during genocide, people will go with the majority opinion of murder because the group decides it. It may not be what some people believe is right, but they do not want to risk being in harms way. Groupthink also leads to a collective feeling of invulnerability: the notion that nothing can happen to the group (Dutton, 2007, p. 103). There is a mutual view that others cannot physically punish a group. They would need to punish each individual, and that leaves a chance that some may get away with murder and receive no punishment at all. Janis examined this phenomenon in small group dynamics but believes that a shift occurred sometime in the past that caused the application of the phenomenon at the national level. Famous examples of groupthink at the national level are Nazi Germany and Rwanda.
