    The Conformity of Women During the Islamic Revolution Prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iranian women possessed numerous freedoms. Although the country was of Muslim origin, it was quite westernized; women had suffrage, protection rights, education, and the ability to exceed in male dominated fields. Moreover, they had the right to express themselves freely by choosing how they represented their materialistic form. That was until the Islamic Regime decreed that women would no longer bare that right. In the emotion-invoking memoir “Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi, the prominent alteration of societal expectations is made visible through the eyes of Marji during the Islamic Revolution. Through the analysis of Persepolis we can determine how the women of Iran responded to the cultural changes and the coercion of the Islamic laws. The first step of the Islamic integration was a cultural revolution; by changing the culture of the country they changed the identity of all men and women. However, young girls and women were mostly affected because some of the modifications were not in favor of their personal beliefs or views. For instance, “Then came 1980: The year it became obligatory to wear the veil at school” (3), Marji begins her book with the implementation of the veil. It was an act of compulsion upon all young girls and women to wear the veil in their everyday life. Due to the many societal changes occurring in Iran, women were demoralized and no longer respect by men.…
