The four largest and best known moons are grouped known as the Galileo Satellites but individually as Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, first seen in 1610 by Galileo Galilei. Each moon is very different. Io has the most volcanic activity of any surface in the solar system. Its surface is covered in sulfur. Io orbits Jupiter in an elliptical orbit and Jupiter’s gravity creates high waves on the moon. Europa’s surface as primarily water ice and is potentially inhabitable. Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system; so large that it is the only moon to have it own magnetic field. Callisto’s surface is covered in craters. Each of the four moons has a unique inner layer structure. Three fourths of the moons have an influence on each other that NASA describes as “Io is in a tug-of-war with Ganymede and Europa.” Ganymede has twice the orbit period as Europa. Europa takes twice as long to orbit Jupiter as…

The first moon, Io, is the closest to Jupiter of the Jovian moons, however, it is Jupiter’s fifth closest moon orbiting at roughly 262,000mi. Though it is slightly larger than our own moon, for Jupiter is it only the third largest. Ganymede, Io, and Europa are in orbital resonance with Jupiter, and this causes their orbits to become elliptical. Io’s orbit takes it through Jupiter’s magnetic lines of force causing it to generate electrical currents. These currents travel along Jupiter’s magnetic…

Ancient Romans would hold giant parties, secretly give gifts, and offer charity to those in need. People would even greet each other with the holiday expression of “Io Saturnalia!” The 7-day festival of Saturnalia was a time of pure celebration and relaxation after the harvesting season. If you think this whole Saturnalia business is a shameless imitation of Christmas, then you’re only half right; it’s the other way around. Saturnalia was celebrated as early as the 1st century CE, over three…

Planet Z vs. Planet Io Liquid water, an energy source, and organic compounds are the three main things that are needed to support life. Planet X and Jupiter’s moon, Io are very interesting celestial bodies that could have life living on it. Although I think one planet is more likely to support life than the other, I think that life would be more likely on Planet Z than Io. Also, Planet Z has more of the requirements for life than Io. Another reason is that Planet Z has more Earth-like qualities…

Same Source, Different Stories: A Comparison of Ovid and Lastman’s Interpretations of the Story of Io Roman mythology is rich with stories of heroism and morality, but another common theme is the tumultuous relationship between Gods and Goddesses. This phenomenon is clearly seen in the myth of Io. The most widely known account of the story of Io was written by Roman poet Ovid in 8AD as one of nearly 250 myths in his poem The Metamorphoses. Jupiter, the chief deity, sees the beautiful nymph Io…
