    However, the internet has evolved further since that study was conducted. Voice and webcam based online interactions make up for the shortcomings that were clearly exhibited in instant messaging. That however doesn’t mean that instant messaging doesn’t serve a good purpose if anything it now has a more specialized role in communication. Through a series of interviews and surveys experts concluded that instant messaging could in fact be used as a way of maintaining existing relations (Quan-Haase and Young, 2010). The profiles themselves are equally important as a medium of communication. A psychology based study found that Facebook profiles allowed for “selective self-presentation” in the internet which was shown to lead to a boost in the formation of new relationships (Gonzales and Hancock, 2011). We can see therefore that while a single type of internet communication isn’t enough to fully satisfy the nature of communication as outlined by Mehrabi (1972), a combination of different types will have the same social effect and help to offset most of the negatives that comes with one form or another. This demonstrates to us how remediation has occurred with communication and the internet and that while it hasn’t evolved into a single set medium, the internet as a whole has allowed for multiple mediums (instant messaging, video calling etc. etc.) to take from the medium of face to face conversations and for it all to be remediated.
