    Initiation rituals are widely practiced in many cultures. These are essential for the continuation of the process of the life course because they usually mark the beginning of a new stage in life. For many societies this new stage is adulthood and for some of these, the initiation rituals practiced in order to reach adulthood are characterised for the use of violence, whether this is symbolical or not. In this essay, I will start explaining why initiation rituals are important for many cultures and for anthropology. Then, I will discuss the theories of two different anthropologists and what are their views regarding the recurrent use of violence when practising initiation rituals.
