Helena is one of the most courageous characters in this entire story. Demetrius, the man that Helena loves is going into the woods searching for Hermia, the women he was supposed to marry. However, unluckily for him, she ran off with the man whom she loved, Lysander. When Demetrius ran away to find Hermia, Helena ran after him. What made this so dangerous is that Demetrius didn’t like Helena at all; in fact he rather loathed her. If Helena got into trouble with a wild beast or muggers, there was a good chance Demetrius wouldn’t help her. Even Demetrius said bad luck could come to her, alone with a man, out in the woods. In Act 2, Scene 1, Lines 227-228, “I’ll run from thee and hide me in the brakes, And leave thee to the mercy of wild beasts.” Demetrius says these words, basically saying that he will leave her to die at the hands of beast. Through these cruel words spoken by the one she loves, Helena continues on. Certainly, Helena’s courage is very admirable and is a very important reason why she is a favorite character of mine.…

Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream illustrates the wavering love between characters Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius and Helena. Shakespeare highlights that humans are primarily governed by individual emotion, rather than reason. This is very apparent in the passage, at the beginning of Act Five. Theseus states: “Lovers and madmen have such seething brains, such shaping fantasies that apprehend more than cool reason ever comprehends” (5.1. 4-6). This passage is important because it stresses two…

previous desires, feelings, or status? In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, William Shakespeare took advantage of the theme of love, comparing the play within a play with affection and Athen’s law in the 1590’s. Although this play is meant to be a comedy, the theme of love runs a major line across the story. Love plays a separate role for each character, varying from type, circumstance, unpredictability, and unreality. Passion of love can make one blind, irrational, inconstant, and desperate,…

Shakespeare shows the importance of not taking everything at face values in his use of romantic relationships in his plays. Instead of making them straightforward romances, he adds enough characterization and plot instances that make you question just how normal these couples are. When taking a look at the couples in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, and briefly at Othello, the complexity of the relationships shows that nothing is quite as it seems. The first couples we’re…

Two of the main themes discussed in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream are love and magic, and one must reflect on how the two correlate between the main characters. Lysander, Hermia, Helen, Demetrius, and Titania are all greatly affected by the use of magic in this story. They seem to already struggle with developing relationships, and the tricky, unpredictable use of magic is of no help to them. In this essay, I will prove that magic undeniably has a negative effect on love and…
