    Solitary Confinement Walking through the gentle fog down the empty street that led from her home to school, Adair subconsciously reached into her backpack and unwound her headphones, as she did every morning on her walks to school. Her thumb clicked the button on the side of her phone to turn the volume of her music up to extra high. It didn't matter so much what the music playing was, as long as there was something coming out of her headphones, she was happy. Frankly, she didn't even like music that much. A few weeks back, Adair experimented with listening to podcasts, with the idea that she could at least learn something rather than just blasting mediocre music all the time. But in the natural pauses between the speakers' phrases and sentences, the deafening sound of her neighborhood's 7:00 am silence always penetrated into her ears. Subsequently, she decided it was best to just stick with music. Approaching the school's cafeteria, the sound of conversation and laughter energized her. She walked over to “the chess table,” as it was called by the kids that didn't play chess. It was widely known that no one sat there unless they “had nothing better to do.” These new friends of hers, who she had started hanging out with in an attempt to learn this strategy game, looked up and smiled warmly in greeting.
