Iditarod The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is an annually held, long distance sled dog race that begins on the first Saturday in March. The distance of this race is about 1150 miles. Each sled is pulled by 16 dogs. The length of the race can last 9-15 days, sometimes even longer. The race generally causes the teams (each dog sled) to race through blizzards that are causing whiteout conditions, and the wind-chill can to drop to as cold as −100 °F. The winner of this race is frequently given the “golden harness”. A red lantern is given to the musher who is the last to cross the finish line. The amount of mushers that receive cash prizes is determined by the size of the purse. They have winning ceremonies which included a giant decorated…
The Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race held in Nome, Alaska. The Iditarod race is enduringly intense, affecting the participants both mentally and physically. Throughout the race, participants may feel sleep-deprived and experience hallucinations worse than an ordinary nightmare. On the day that Paulsen competes, he is one of the seventy-three mushers who finishes number forty-two. By the end of Woodsong, Paulsen has become a student of himself, the dogs, and the experience. With this in mind, Paulsen…
watch the greatest dog sled race in the world. 100 mushers start at the starting line in Anchorage, Alaska, and travel thousands of miles, to the finish line is Nome, Alaska. They are put out with many challenges along the way. Frost bite, below freezing temperatures, etc. etc. But somehow they all have a goal, the goal of being an idol to someone. To show people and kids, that it’s okay to go out there, when the chances are slim of surviving, and to prove yourself, and everyone wrong. There are…
Throughout The Sports Gene we encountered athletes like Donald Thomas, sled dog, and to an extent basketball players. However, athletes like Dan McLaughlin, Jim Ryun, and Dominican baseball players seemed to be the product of arduous practice and their environment. Both of these factors allow devoted athletes to reach their highest potentials and represent their countries. Genetics play a major and often pivotal role in athletic excellence. Stefan Holm lived for the high jump. Holm spent much…
“I care not much for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it.” Abraham Lincoln Located at the end of County Line Road, near Alfalfa, Oregon, the large sign at the entrance served as a notice that I was entering the Oregon Badlands Wilderness. Exploring the wilderness areas in Central Oregon and absorbing the seclusion they offer is invigorating. Beyond the dirt parking lot at the trailhead a gravel road continued into the federally protected wilderness area. Designated…
1,150 miles of nothing but ice cold snow, and determination. This is the reality of the Iditarod, a race the main character of my book Gary Paulsen competes in. This race takes place in Alaska where elite runners face the hardest terrain in the world and cover 1,150 miles of land with their dogs. In this book, Gary starts training with practically no experience and no racing dogs to run the longest race in existence but, ends up not only running the race once but twice and wins the second time.…
Wild takes place. Call of the Wild would be a good book to try out because of a nice challenge in the writing, good life lessons being taught, and it also had relatable characters. Some people may argue that the plot is too simple, with too difficult phrasing, maybe how there are too many lessons, and not enough entertainment, and too many characters, but not all readers may think that. Call of the Wild is definitely a good book to read. In Call of the Wild, there are many life lessons. There…
Buck, the main protagonist of the novel, goes through one of the most miserable times of his life. He is captured by Perrault and François, as both see potential in Buck as a new lead dog. However, they don't plan to just use Buck as a lead dog, they plan to put him on a grueling quest to find the Klondike region of Canada. During many points the expedition, London does something not many people do with their characters, constantly fail. Most authors would make their character fail in their goal…
The Call of the Wild : Survival A major theme in Jack London’s classic novel The Call of the Wild is Buck must embark on a long and brutal adventure to survive. In the beginning of the book,Buck is surviving at Judge Miller's place. The first reason Buck is surviving is because he is a pampered dog he thinks he the King. For example he think he doesn't need to learn to survive. Second, Buck must learn the law of Club and Fang to survive. The man in the red sweater teaches Buck the law of…
