Poetry of life against prosaic life The passage “Icarus and Daedalus” by Josephine Preston Peabody and the poem “Icarus” by Wendy A. Shaffer tell us about the same event: the tragic death of Icarus who neglected his father's instructions. In their works both authors pay special attention to various aspects of nature, such as bird feathers, the sun, and water. However, the roles that they assign to these aspects are very different. J. P. Peabody tells us that Daedalus watching seagulls in the…
In Latin,“intertextus”, means to intermingle while weaving serves as the root for the word “intertextuality” which was introduced in the late 1960s and thoroughly used in novels written by Toni Morrison. Morrison published the Song of Solomon in 1977, which follows the life of Macon “Milkman” Dead III from birth to death, as he travels from his hometown in Michigan to Virginia in search of his family and himself. As a privileged African American, Milkman has a diverse array of experiences,…
values upheld in the era of its creation. As such, Ovid’s narrative poem, ‘Metamorphosis’ 8 CE, depicts the dangers for man to deviate from the natural order. Leading on from this, Pieter Bruegel’s acclimatised art piece, ‘Landscape with the Fall of Icarus’ c. 1560, emphasises the sustenance of work. Also, as W.H. Auden’s poem, ‘Musée des Beaux Arts’ is heavily influenced by these presented texts, he had yet presented a more suitable paradigm to his era of the ignorance one has for disasters…
In this seminar, I will discuss approaches through which Alison Bechdel exposes her emotions and personal perplexities within the literary and graphic aspects of her memoir such as her relationship with her father and her road to self-discovery. Approaches such as distinct pigment of the drawings, and the use of specific motifs and allusions are how Bechdel’s hidden and confused thoughts are represented. Bechdel’s illustrations are toned with a dismal blue/green colour throughout most of Fun…
The painting “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” depicts a beautiful birds-eye view of the landscape. While demonstrating the working lifestyle of the seemingly middle-class individuals in focus, it also projects the vivid appearance of the area as a result of such efforts. Alone, the painting seems to be only an image of a typical day with minor concentration on the human struggling in the water. “Musée des Beaux Arts” enhances the interpretation of the painting as it reveals the details of…
The story of Icarus has inspired many books and shows and even video games. Most notably, it has inspired many songs, such as Icarus by Bastille and Icarus by The Staves, as well as Icarus by White Hinterland and Icarus Borne on Steel Wings by Kansas. Most of these songs use the fall of Icarus as a metaphor for being in a dangerous or less than ideal situation. One song states that “Icarus is flying towards an early grave” (Bastille), referring to a person who is having fun (i.e. drinking), but…
like in the poem Icarus and Daedalus, where Icarus takes a choice to fly close to the sun. Nevertheless, can’t the problem also be the overcautious parents, because according reverse psychology everyone wants to do something that people tell them not to do. This not only leads to danger, but also unhealthy relationships because of the lack of good communication. As society and parents overly caution their kids about hazards, the communication gap widens between them just like Icarus was unduly…
falls down soon after (Bechdel 3). She used the Greek mythology of Daedalus and Icarus to suggest that perhaps it isn't only the child who can take Icarus’ position: "In our particular reenactment of this mythic relationship, it was not me but my father who was to plummet from the sky" (Bechdel 4). Daedalus was the master of craftsman. He made two pairs of wings out of wax and feathers for himself and his son, Icarus. Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, or else it would melt…
to Breughel’s, a Dutch painter’s piece of art, the Landscape with the Fall of Icarus. William’s choice of title is the same as the painting’s while W. H. Auden names the museum. The painting – and thus the poems – illustrates the famous ancient Greek legend about Icarus and his father, Daedalus. According to the myth Icarus did not pay attention to Daedalus’s warn, flew to high and the sunbeam melted his wax wings. Icarus fell into the sea and drowned. This is the moment which the painting…
'Musée des Beaux Arts' and 'Landscape with the Fall of Icarus' are ekphrasis; the poems are about the Icarus painting. In 'Musée des Beaux Arts', Arden uses two paintings to express what he wants people to know about life and how the most significant or famous events takes place are insignificant during then. In 'Landscape with the Fall of Icarus', the structure is very simple and has little punctuation; this leaves the reader to interpret the poem their own way. In 'Musée des Beaux Arts',…
