another example of Dickens own personal experiences, “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times”(Dickens, 1859). In the year 1855, Dickens received a letter from Maria Beadnell. Maria wanted to meet up with Dickens, disregarding the fact that they were both had spouses, and wanted to keep it a secret from their spouses. Dickens, delighted to hear from Maria after such a long time, agreed to meet with her. Maria had tried to warn Dickens that she had not been the same Maria that he had once come to know and love, she had changed after being married. Although Maria gave these warnings, Dickens still can to a loss of words at the changes that he had noticed within Maria. The feeling that he had received that day, essentially meeting a “new” Maria, gave Dickens the idea to create the character Flora Finching. These feelings are described with these words: Flora, always tall, had grown to be very broad, too, and short of breath; but that was not much. Flora, Whom he had left a lily, had become a peony; but that was not much. Flora, Who had seemed enchanting in all she said and thought, was diffuse and silly. That was much. Flora, who had been spoiled and artless long ago, was determined to be spoiled and artless now. That was a fatal blow. - Dickens, p. 72. As we can tell from this, it was a much different Dora than Dickens was used to, which made his novel Little Dorrit quite interesting. In 1858, Dickens and his wife, Kate, had separated. Lack of education is…

Mariam’s mother does not support her. This is seen when she calls Mariam harami. As Mariam grows older she begins to think about the meaning of the word harami she says, “She understood then what Nana meant, that a harami was an unwanted thing; that she, Mariam, was an illegitimate person who would never have legitimate claim to the things other people had, things such as love, family, home, acceptance (Hosseini 4).” Mariam understands that her mother never accepted her, and that she would…

The words “house” and “home” are often used interchangeably, yet they have vastly different connotations. A house draws the mental image of a physical shelter designed to accommodate people. Home, however, is a less tangible term, as it can refer to both a physical place or immaterial things associated with comfort or security. While house is not always synonymous with home, the physical and nonphysical sense of home can be explored by examining the fixtures in a household setting. In…
