    product was not worth the near 15 year wait. On the other side of the spectrum is Metal Gear. When Hideo Kojima first started working on Metal Gear the intent was to make a generic military action game. However, due to huge limitations on the computer the game was being programmed on, he realized the game had to take a different direction. The MSX2 could only handle a few sprites at a time or the framerate would drop and sprites would flicker making the game unplayable. He had to find a way to create a compelling game without using very many sprites. This forced him to think outside the box and create something new that would eventually change the face of gaming. First Kojima designed a combat game without shooting. However, he quickly realized this wouldn’t ultimately lead to an enjoyable game. As it turns out, taking the combat out of combat games doesn’t generally make for good gameplay. Then he made the game all about escape and running away. In his own words though, that was “totally uncool”. It just didn’t feel heroic to always be running away from enemies rather than fighting them. Taking inspiration from James Bond and other spy movies, he ultimately reached a final idea, a game about infiltration where the goal was avoiding enemies rather than confronting them. And thus the first ever stealth game was born. Instead of a probably forgettable action game Hideo Kojima created a beloved franchise and inspired an entire genre.
