Do Stalker Ads Creep You Out? A few months ago I decided to leave home and rent out some office space. I splurged and bought a new office equipment, furniture and general supplies. I’m an avid online shopper and Amazon.com is one of my best friends. Sometimes Amazon can get a little creepy when it decides to stalk me. Over the next month as I settled into the new office, I kept seeing ads for trash cans, binder clips and desk chairs. Amazon went above and beyond in making sure that I had a place for my trash, that my papers stayed organized and that I had a place to sit. Precision The technical term for stalker ads is ‘retargeting’ or ‘remarketing’ and have been around for several years now. The technology for stalker ads has become rather…

Orwell’s dominant theme in 1984 - Physical Control and Control of Information and History is suggested through his use of incorporating certain feelings and physical contrast. Winston gets most of this “torture” and pain. The physical control is a big part of the book and it is a key element in the novel. Control of information and history also comes into the book quite a bit. Both of these tie together in certain ways. Physical Control is everywhere in the novel 1984. It is around every corner…

Growing up history was my favorite subject in school. I would read books that gave me a glimpse into the life of those before me. My fascination surrounded the period in which my grandparents grew up. They would tell me stories about what life was like and what it meant to live in a world following the Great Depression. Thus, my understanding of history helped me to better understand and appreciate my grandparents. Why they liked certain musicians, movies, literature, political parties, and so…

“Who controls the past, controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.” Quoted by George Orwell. One of the most eloquent and expressive pieces of writing written by Orwell is 1984, which is depicted thoroughly through his use of rhetoric. The novel demonstrates the life of a man stripped of his memory, his pride, and his freedom, coming to realization with the rebellious force driving him to break the rules enforced by the Inner Party. The Party is the form of government…

assignment I had not really thought much about what the differences between history and social sciences, such as political science, anthropology, and sociology, might be. After giving it some thought, I came to notice some of the differences, but I did struggle because the majority of my history classes focused on the United States while briefly touching on the history of the world. As stated in the lecture, both history and social sciences examine the past, but while they have some things in…

summer I had the privilege to reenact an important part of history - the pioneer journey west. Although the trek was somewhat difficult I had many great experiences. While pulling and pushing a handcart for 7 miles a day was difficult, surprisingly, the hardest part of trek for me was enduring the 12 hour long car rid back, because I had to ride in the deacon’s (12 year old young men’s) car, with them singing along to Taylor Swift. From my experiences I had, I learned that the things the…

worldview, Howard Zinn’s The Politics of History comes to mind. His book is a collection of case studies and essays that argue for a radical approach to the past. Zinn’s work changed the way I saw my purpose in life. I had originally planned to enter a field in science, despite my passion for history and the Humanities. In an age where the college degree had lost its traditional value, STEM fields seemed to me like the only practical route to success. However, Zinn inspired me to pursue a career…

History is dynamic, placing those in the past in certain titles of either being immoral or genuine, is not only false but is also deceitful, Christopher Columbus for instance, a famous explorer during the 14th century was titled various names by some, a vain egotistic man who started the colonization of western civilization and by others the glorious imperialist who “sailed the ocean blue” but, what else is there to know about Christopher Columbus then what we hear about him? To start of with…

Per Lewis H. Lapham, the record is our inheritance, the one that Goethe had in mind when he suggested a restructuring of the deal that Satan offered Faust. It isn’t with magic that men make their immortality. They do so with what they’ve learned on their travels across the frontiers of five millennia, salvaging from the ruin of families and the death of cities what they find to be useful or beautiful or true. We have nothing else with which to build the future except the lumber of the…
