Archimedes was a mathematician, physicist, astronomer, engineer and inventor. Archimedes was the first big mathematician, as well as consider the best mathematician of that era. Archimedes was born in the Greek city-state of Syracuse. His father, Phidias, was an astronomer. The fact that his father was an astronomer made him motivated to do all the inventions he did. He was really close to King Hieron and his son, Gelon. He worked for them, when he lived in Alexandria. He invented the sciences…
The low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor is an important protein in human function. LDL receptor is the main protein that binds and carries cholesterol to maintain homeostasis in mammalian cells. In human plasma, it is also the most abundant cholesterol-carrying lipoprotein (Goldstein and Brown, 1987). It plays a major role in the development of atherosclerosis, a chronic disease caused by the accumulation of LDL-cholesterol in the blood. The LDL receptor is also the main protein that is…
Mounds can be found throughout the Midwestern part of the United States. Almost every mound was man made by the early Native Americans mound builders. The history of the mound builders can date back thousands of years. Many wonder why they built the mounds and what were there purpose to these people. History of the ancient mound builders along with their religious beliefs can help get an idea of the purpose the mounds. Mounds were built with mud and wood to support the structure. Native…
China’s Rural Crisis: The Fall of Power The Qing dynasty ended in 1912 with a revolution; however, it had been declining for more than a century before it falls. Corruptions within the empire, population growth combined with food shortages, and the social unrest between the ethnic majority Han and the ruling Machus all contributed to Qing’s downfall. However, despite all of these internal issues, it was external pressures that caused the eventual collapse of the Qing society. Foreign…
In the early 17th century names like Francois Viete and Bartholomeo Pitiscus were still ringing through the mathematical community’s ears. Viete had blown everyone away with his book Canon Mathematicus in 1579. The book contained a collection of trigonometric formulas and tables. Viete was also responsible for trisecting an angle and the construction of the regular pentagon. Bartholomeo Pitiscus had coined the term trigonometry in the title of his 1595 book, Trigonometria. This book was split…
interest to mathematicians around the world since its introduction, including Martin Gardner who explores it in chapter eight of his first Scientific American Book of Mathematical Puzzles and Games (1959). The game is normally played on a board of 11x11 hexagons with two edges labelled black and the other two labelled white. It is a two-person game in which both players (using black and white counters) attempt to create a chain connecting both of their respective sides of the board. This chapter…
In such a complex world, an individual always seems to seek comfort and belonging. When they are placed out of their comfort zones, however, a dilemma converts into chaos. For Damien Hirst, a British post-modern artist born in Bristol, England on June 6 of 1965, unique art pieces like “The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living” (1991) and “With Dead Head”(1991), provoked controversy in the artistic audience(theartstory.org). It is through his unique art pieces that the…
Kindergarten Teacher Observations and Post Conferences Mrs. P taught for 15 years, and is entering her third year teaching Kindergarten at Jefferson. During our pre-conference Mrs. P and I reviewed the Danielson framework and discussed the lessons she wanted me to observe. Mrs. P asked me to observe her working one on one with a student, and teaching a whole group reading lesson. I entered Mrs. P’s classroom on September 9th at 2:10 pm. Students had come in from last recess at 2:05.…
Autonomous Learner Model Figure 2 The Autonomous Learner Model was developed by Dr. George Betts and Ms. Jolene Kercher to give students more power. In fact, Betts and Kercher developed this model with the input of students. Autonomous Learner Model is an approach to helping students become problem solvers through divergent and convergent thinking (Betts and Knapp, 1981). The Autonomous Learner Model (ALM) is to promote self-directed learning in gifted and talented students. The major goal of…
Sling Length vs Trebuchet Efficiency Procedure A Trebuchet was made as per this video. A 15 cm sling was made, which had knots tied into it every 3 cm. The Trebuchet was then placed on the floor. The Trebuchet was fired using the sling at the 3 cm knot. The place the projectile landed was marked, and the distance measured. This was repeated 2 more times, and the average calculated. The experiment was then repeated for all the other knots on the sling (6, 9, 12, 15). The maximum theoretical…
