Throughout most of this class this semester, the idea of what makes an Islamic movement authentically “Islamic” appears to be explicit, hardline doctrinal ties to the establishment of some sort of Islamic polity. As Ali Rahnema mentions in the introduction of the Pioneers of the Islamic Revival: “Islamic Revivalism …is characterized by a renewed interest in Islam as an endogenous ideology with redeeming powers. For the born-again Muslim the Qur’an and the Tradition of the Prophet provide…
as a component that will help him take more control of his life and the different things that continually affects the way he relates to people. Throughout his journey, Siddharta comes to terms with the different teachings such as Gotama, Brahmin heritage, and the Samana, which help him realize that spiritual enlightenment does not focus on others who are around him, but is rooted in his personal conception of the world and the issues that easily resonate…
Mainstream psychology is often considered to be factual and objective however it is argued by critical psychologists that research is often influenced by its social, cultural, historical and political context. Critical psychologists have disputed the notion of objective psychology and have identified different levels at which values can be seen to operate within mainstream psychology. In this essay I will critically discuss the extent to which mainstream research has benefited more powerful…

Twenty Years at Hull House by Jane Addams modeled a method in social work that existed in contrast to the Charitable Organization Societies (COS). Addams chose to live among the disadvantaged and immigrant populations, seeking a reciprocal relationship that would encourage a symbiotic existence between social classes (p. 59). Where Hull House did not attempt to decide the fate of the poor, COS existed solely to facilitate “friendly visitors” to enter the homes of the poor and use the data they…

The media does not portray people of color in the media enough—and when minorities are cast or depicted in films, commercials, and other forms of media, they are limited to an overplayed and annoying (and boring) stereotype or filler trope (ethos). Although Hollywood films and other media industries may recognize that there is not enough diversity in their films, there are still little to no changes being made. Roles…
Recently I sat down to read Kate Chopin's short story, The Story of an Hour, at the recommendation of a friends. At just over 1,000 words it's a very short story indeed, it was a fun read that really drove home the idea that a lot can happen in an hour. It also provided some excellent examples of irony as a literary device done right. If you haven’t read it before, check it out at Kate Chopin International Society's website. Shortly after finish the story (it’s really only a couple of pages, if…
