and to decrease drought. However, there is very limited study had been done on interaction of insects to drought stressed plants. In previous studies related to drought and insect interaction, Grinnan et al. (2013) found genetic variation in soybean plants due to biotic and abiotic stress . Moreover, synergistic effects had been detected on Nicotiana quadrivalvis due to drought and harbivory stress in other study by Grinnan et al. (2013) . Plasticity in response to these complex environment conditions may influence plant fitness by effecting floral visitation and defense. In a study by Gutbrodt et al. (2011) on Alliaria petiolata, it had been found that there is decrease in plant defense compounds due to combined stresses of drought and herbivory. Drought and herbivores interactions with their host plants depend upon several factors or characteristics of plant and attacking herbivore. Studying the combined effects of drought and herbivore can provide more information about the machenisms behind these stress responses. We studied both drought and herbivore and their combined effect on Boechera stricta. We had used two populations i.e. Black Hills (lower elevation) and Big Horns (high elevation) and two genotypes from each population. After a certain growth with similar conditions to all the plants, we started our treatment on 23rd dad and start stressing half of plants with drought and kept half as control. We watered drought stressed plants only once a week and twice a…

    Milkweed Hypothesis

The absence of a negative relationship between these two variables implies that milkweed bugs may not have a major impact on the milkweeds’ reproductive fitness, and therefore it is possible that the population of milkweeds studied may favor a strategy of tolerance of herbivory over defense. This positive correlation observed may be due to a larger number seedpods being able to accommodate a larger number of milkweed bugs in space and as a food source. There was much variability in the number of…

A Local Ecosystem Investigation- The Disappearing Micro-Bats Of Scheyville National Park Habitats Habitats that exist in Longneck Lagoon for the micro-bats are terrestrial and aquatic. The forest is classified as a Cumberland Plain Woodland. A healthy ecosystem has 15% to 20% herbivory, in the terrestrial ecosystem it had an average of 33.5% herbivory. In the terrestrial ecosystem, to illustrate the distribution a transect and a transect study was used. From the 160m transect study. Four…

The management program for the maples includes practices for light, beech competition, and herbivory. To test to see how much light sugar maples need, they set up an experiment with three repetitions of five treatments. The treatments ranged from a clear-cut acre (100% light) to an acre receiving 25% light. For each acre, half was sprayed with herbicides for the beeches. For herbivory, they set up a deer exclosure. Interestingly, within the exclosure, there were many birch saplings and trees…

Linear regression models were applied to data that had two continuous variables (y~x: average % herbivory ~ patch size/elevation). An ANOVA was applied to data that included the categorical variable of leaf placement on the plants stem or canopy cover, or all 3 variables for interaction analysis, (y~x*z; average % herbivory~patch size*leaf placement/canopy/patch size*canopy*elevation). Assumptions of models were checked under the gvlma package version 1.0.0.2. Data was log-transformed if it did…

clades only appeared after the Eocene. Despite this, conifers (at least, modern conifers) have higher drought resistance than angiosperms, able to survive even in severe drought conditions (Augusto, Davies, Delzon, & De Schrijver, 2014). Consequently, the advent of dry niches may explain the initial rise of the angiosperms, but cannot describe a competitive edge throughout all time periods. Hypothesis 3: Ecological Innovation of the Angiosperm Because abiotic factors often limit angiosperm…

greater body size. The bulk of plant matter is difficult to digest. Plant cell walls are composed of cellulose, which vertebrates cannot naturally digest. So, vertebrates must rely on gut bacteria that are capable of digesting cellulose through fermentation. This symbiotic relationship would be facilitated by thermoregulation, as gut bacteria possess an ideal habitable temperature range. Plant digestion would also be facilitated through enhanced means of mechanical digestion, such as blunt…

production which can have detrimental effects on the economy and the whole of the human populace. Next, there are three biotic “interactions” that can either have detrimental or beneficial effects on plant expression. The first is mutualism. Mutualism is a species to species interaction in which a plant and the biotic factor are benefited by the relationship. For example, forest and fruit trees, as well with other plants, associate with a specific type of fungi which aid in the ingestion of…

2015). As of 2012, the elk of Yellowstone’s northern range continuously decline in number due to pressure from wolves, resulting in decreased herbivory of woody plants (Ripple et al. 2015). Elk eat sprouts of woody plants and tread on any ground trees might thrive, causing growth suppression. Wolf control was also used for a resident moose population of Isle Royale, Michigan, where wolves had remarkable effects on forest composition. This was also revealed when top-predators of vertebrates were…

Managers focus on white-tailed deer as an economic commodity, as hunting leases can be an important source of income (Bartoskewitz et al. 2003). It is suggested that white-tailed deer are probably the most popular big game animal in the world (Hiller 1996). In the United States, white-tailed deer contribute billions of dollars to the nation’s economy each year in the form of hunts, which support wildlife research and management (Hiller 1996). Many landowners and managers have adopted the use of…
