I was interested to learn about the explorations that took place around late 1400’s because I wanted to know how these men were able to succeed in sail into water and not knowing where they will end up in since it was their first time. Also, I was intrigued by how people from different cultures and countries would welcome the sailors into their land. Vasco da Gama, the author of this journal, was born in 1460 at Sines, Portugal. He had a reputation of being a warrior and a navigator, to which created interest to Price Manuel and Prince John. The two princes, wanted to continue the efforts of Prince Henry of exploring the new ways to sail to Asia. The reason for his writing was to keep a journal of all of his findings in his expedition in order to present to the King of Portugal in hopes of finding a trading route to Asia. I believe he wrote his journal as he went along with his expedition between year 1497 and 1498. In Portugal, Prince Henry was a known as “the navigator”. He was eager to find routes that could lead to Asia. He wanted to set up a school for mariners where they could learn how to navigate the sea. He sponsored many expeditions to explore the African coast in order to find a route to Asia. Around this time period, the Mongol Empire disintegrated and it resulted to the trade network to collapse.
