France A. Córdova is an astrophysicist and the 14th director of the $7-billion independent federal agency, the National Science Foundation (NSF). Previously, Córdova served as NASA's chief scientist – she was the youngest person and the first woman to hold this position. Córdova's scientific contributions have been in the areas of observational and experimental astrophysics, multi-spectral research on x-ray and gamma ray sources and space-borne instrumentation. She has published more than 150 scientific papers. She is a recipient of NASA's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Medal, and was recognized as a Kilby Laureate. The Kilby International Awards recognize extraordinary individuals who have made "significant contributions to society through science, technology, innovation, invention and education." Córdova, the oldest of 12 children, was born in France to American parents. She attended high school in La Puente, Calif., east of Los Angeles. She then entered Stanford University, where she graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in English and, among other activities, conducted anthropology field work in a Zapotec Indian pueblo in Oaxaca, Mexico. In 1997, She was named one of Hispanic Business magazine's “100 Most Influential Hispanics“ and in 2002 was named one of its “80 Elite Hispanic Women.“ Running NSF is as much about politics as about science: Córdova spends long hours on Capitol Hill making her case to lawmakers about the importance of…

A problem that I would like to solve is to make art and science museums more accessible to people of all backgrounds. This concern has been brought to my attention by conversations with staff at The Ringling Museum where I volunteer. So often it seems that people see going to the museum as a luxury. I believe that if children were given more options to go to museums, it may help them to bring a higher interest to their education. Museums offer something a textbook cannot. Seeing art in front of…

According to Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium, people often grossly overestimate the portion of their tax dollar that go to NASA – estimates often come in around 10%, when in reality, only ½ of 1% of the federal budget is allocated towards NASA. In other words, only half of a penny from each dollar in taxes goes to space exploration and research. Now imagine if the funding were doubled. We could maintain a presence on the Moon while simultaneously put a…

Many still oppose the idea of space exploration. To me, space simply cannot be explored enough. In his article, Neil deGrasse Tyson mentions witnessing a simulation in the Hayden Planetarium, “which took visitors on a virtual zoom from New York City to the edge of the cosmos.” During this production, Tyson continues, “the audience saw Earth, then the solar system, then the 100 billion stars of the Milky Way galaxy shrink to barely visible dots on the planetary dome” (Tyson). This simulation…
