In 1986, the Oprah Winfrey Show was launched (by Oprah) as a nationally syndicated program. Her show placed on 120 channels and had an audience of 10 million people. By the end of its first year, the show made $125 million (which Oprah got $30 million out of). She soon became the owner of the program from ABC, then controlled it under her new production company Harpo Productions (which is Oprah spelled backwards) and made more money from syndication. In 1994, talk shows were starting to become very trashy and exploitative. Because of this, Winfrey pledged to keep her show free of tabloid topics. Rates soon started to fall, but Oprah earned the respect of her viewers and was later rewarded with a rise in popularity. One of Winfrey’s projects with Harpo have included a highly rated 1989 T.V. miniseries The Women of Brewster Place which Oprah also starred in. She also signed a multi-picture contract with Disney. The original project (the 1988’s Beloved) was based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Toni Morrison and starred Winfrey and Danny Glover.
