    protests the Turkish military, accompanied by ordinary Turkish men, walked into cities populated by Armenians and murdered thousands of Armenians, making no distinction between the old and young and having no mercy. This is know as the Hamidian or Armenian massacre and happened through 1894-1896. The estimated number of Armenians killed during this time is thought to be around 100,000-300,000. The Hamidian massacre was aimed only at the Armenians but soon all Christians were being targeted. Armenians who were not killed were either forced to convert to Islam, or were forced to fled to parts of Europe and the Americas to find refuge. The Hamidian massacres caught the eye of world and was published in many newspapers across the globe. Numerous American missionaries and representatives who worked through the Ottoman Empire saw the monstrosities firsthand and assembled relief efforts for the Armenians. Help for Armenian casualties turned into the first global mission of the American Red Cross. A group known as the Near East Relief raised more than $100 million in aid for the Armenians during the massacres, and later the genocide . The assets gathered spared endless Armenian lives, but it was the only aid Armenians would see.
