teenage years. Many times he would partake in rebellious acts and risky behavior, but his parents never disciplined him for anything and only saw it as a phase. As Niedzviecki grew older, he continued with his “radical tendencies” and not only did his parents accept it, but they encouraged it fully. His first realizations of society accepting non-conformist ideals were from Hallmark birthday cards his parents gave him. Hal remarks “In a world that craves Hallmark greeting cards about overturning the grey-suited enemies of individuality, the nonconformist has lost his identity. Far from being weird and rebellious, he becomes normal and placid. On my thirty-first birthday I realized that my nonconformity is not merely tolerated, but replicated and accepted” (Niedzviecki 2006).The full acceptance of his non-conformist identity had completely erased his central identity. In his book, Hello, I’m Special: How Individuality Became the New Conformity, Niedzviecki writes “More and More people want to be special and noticed, and we want to create bigger, better…

Yellow Card It is an average day at Cumberland Elementary; my face warms from the sun gleaming through the windows, and I sit in my desk in Mrs. Huffman’s second grade classroom. It is a rather cheerful classroom; chairs of all different vibrant colors stationed at each desk, my own being purple. A cushy rug with a checkered pattern displaying the alphabet fills space between the desks and the chalkboard. The wall to my left has the sticker board marking how many teeth each student has lost. I…
