    Rastafarianism, is their dietary restrictions as a way of life. Each has their own rationale and reasoning for the restrictions, but all should be respected, and prisoners should not be forced to eat food that their religion has denounced. The actions of Australian Corrective Services Minister David Elliott sets a good example for the US as he recently lifted some of the restrictions making it near impossible for Muslim inmates to consume halal meat, with vegetarian food as the only other option. In Australia, the prison system had granted a weekly allowance to prisoners of $100 a week to purchase their food, they then cut the allowance to $13 a week, which did not cover the $32 a week necessary to purchase the halal meals. To solve this conundrum, Elliott made it possible for the families of inmates to deposit small sums of money into to accounts where the inmates could access the funds to buy halal food. He worked to lessen the difficulties on the basis that it is healthy for prisoners, especially the younger ones, to experience religion (“Halal”). While this occurs in Australia, and their prison system operates differently, the ideology remains the same. Prisoners should have food meeting religious standards available to them. To put it simply, prisoners deserve to eat the food that their religion has deemed acceptable.
