industrialized Mexico, but he did not solve the problems that came with industrialization. Laborers that were working in industrial factories had poor working conditions: low wages and no chance for promotion (Frost and Keegan 16-17). Also, workers in the haciendas, or plantations, were often illiterate, paid low wages, and had a one in four mortality rate (“The Restored Republic and Porfiriato”). Sometimes, the workers were not paid actual wages, but given credits for use in the company store…
drove the landholding to dispute with the indians. Traditionally, indian lands were protected by the Spanish law, but with the flux of migration and land abandon Spaniards took their lands to rule on. All of theses facts contribute to understand the haciendas, system where the big lands are owned by few people, on the eighteenth and nineteenth…
Review of “The Storm That Swept Mexico” The review of the documentary “The Storm That Swept Mexico” will cover two points in this review. The first point of my review will be how this documentary demonstrated how individualistic and collectivistic culture's interaction can lead to events such as a revolution. Secondly, I will attempt to answer the question of what was the effect of revolution on Mexico and its peoples. Individualistic and collectivist cultures in “The Storm That Swept Mexico”…
Both the Mexican Revolution and the Russian Revolution happened in the early 20th century. Though the events of each revolution weren’t correspondent, the revolutions themselves had the same goal. The outcome wasn’t exactly the same for the both of them, but similarities can be traced between the two. It’s notable that neither revolution had the intended outcome in the end. The Mexican and Russian revolutions were caused from the peasant’s need for land, both had a somewhat successful outcome,…
From Columbus’ discovery of the Americas to about 1800, colonization by the Spanish and Portuguese redesigned the trade and social systems. Industry had both positive and negative effects within Latin America, its imperial powers of Spain and Portugal, and the African slave trading system. Although the sugar industry jumpstarted the economy of Latin America and helped to set up the system of global relations that we have today, it left the region at a disadvantage in trade and had lasting…
Topic: Through his essay “Resignifying Preservation: A Borderlands Response to American Eugenics in Jovita Gonzalez and Eve Raleigh's Caballero”, Pablo Ramirez explores the importance of eugenics in Mexican society and how pure blood lines were crucial for marriage in the the time period when the novel takes place. At the same time, he analyzes how Gonzalez and Raleigh try to counterattack the modern views regarding the preservation of race and culture of the time when the novel was written by…
Robert Sobukwe once said, “There is only one race, the human race(Azquote).” Social stratification in places, such as Mexico and other South American countries it is clear that some places and people are wealthier than the majority who are not. Mexico’s history proves that social stratification remains persistent through generations. People of “mixed race” are considered more valuable than those who have common hispanic of latino characteristics. Mexico’s past has produced a racial hierarchy…
A major theme Allende’s novel The House of the Spirits is the cyclical nature of love and hate in families. The Trueba and Garcia families are enemies throughout the story, however even when they believe they are polar opposites, their characteristics actually point to further connection. Esteban Trueba and Esteban Garcia have a similar pattern of hate and vengeful retribution, but differ in the motivations for achieving their goals. These characters are shaped by society to pursue their goals…
Bolivian music type and dance around the world. The word caporal means ranch manager or foreman in Spanish. Costumes are worn and meanings of the dance are different. This traditional dance parodies the mulatto overseers who managed the large Colonial haciendas on behalf of their owners. The whip and the clothing was traditionally used by the landowners are part of the dance costumes. Another music type and dance is Diablada, which means devil in Spanish. This is probably the most famous of all…
For my religious/spiritual encounter, I visited a Buddhist temple by the name of Hsi Lai located in the city of Hacienda Heights. The Hsi Lai Temple, built in 1988, spans across 15 acres of land, with architecture like those of the ancient Chinese monasteries from Ming and Qing dynasty (International Buddhist Progress Society, n.d.). The name Hsi Lai translated into Chinese means “coming west”, representing the propagation of Buddhism into the Western Hemisphere. Today the temple spreads the…
