In Edward O. Wilson’s newest book Half Earth: Our Planet’s Fight for Life, he argues that if we conserve half of the earth’s land and water for nature, we are likely to save 90% of the remaining life on the planet. At Wildlands Network, we have long advocated for essentially the same vision for the biodiversity of North America, long before Dr. Wilson so eloquently put it into words at the global scale. We’re putting these ideas into practice with the formation of our Eastern Wildway Network,…
birds or small animals and plant habitats and foods for those animals so they have a place to live. People can fund corporations that help protect wildlife. Endangered species are a problem because no animal should be on their way to extinction when we should care for the earth that we live on, many endangered species are because of careless hunters that poach and take more than allowed. These animals on the endangered species list play key roles within their habitats and environment that…
The purpose of this study is to assess the habitat quality of Schmeeckle Reserve in regards to the needs of the Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes). This research will focus on the presence and relative abundance of small mammals, which serve as the main food source of the Red Fox’s diet. The vegetative habitat will also be studied; this includes the cover types present and any forage plant species used by the fox for food. The results of this study will allow for the continued management of the Red Fox in…
Red, yellow, and orange blended into a single swath of color as I drove north along the Blue Ridge Parkway on an autumn day in Appalachia. I slowed down as I passed by a row of trees noticeably smaller than the rest, reflecting back to what was visible before their growth. Six years ago, as a high school student, I used a graphical information system (GIS) to conduct a viewshed analysis of undesirable vantage points on this scenic byway. Alongside this data I created before and after imagery in…
the anatomy, physiology, and obscurities of every phylum, through dissections and field work. As my knowledge and respect for wildlife and conservation grew, I was given the opportunity to be the cartographer and artist for the Washtenaw Community College Nature Trail that was put into place this year for education and conservation efforts in the natural habitat for the many species that surrounds the campus. When I transferred to Cornell, I was ready…
Zoologist and wildlife biologist study animals and other wildlife and see how they interact with their ecosystems. They also study the characteristics of animals, animal behaviors, and the impacts humans have on wildlife and natural habitats. Specialisations of this profession include: entomologist (insects), herpetologist (amphibians), ichthyologist (fish), mammalogist (mammals), ornithologist (birds), or marine biologist. It’s important to gain experience from either work experience or…
blind us to the realities of a situation. It is tragically easy to lose sight of what it would take and the resources required to turn de-extinction into a viable method of repopulation. De-extinction is an impractical approach to re-population and conservation, and therefore should not be pursued by science because it shifts resources away from currently endangered animals, and we cannot justify spending money on it. A grand feat of science such as de-extinction would require resources of…
to listen to counter arguments and just see this as a negative thing with no benefits to animals. Despite common conception, legal trophy hunting has helped saved species, persevered land from development and is the majority source of wild life conservation funding in these countries. I also feel the need to point out that trophy hunting and…
A long, long, long time ago, approximately 3.5-39 billion years ago the very first living organisms appeared on Earth1. During the Cambrian Period/Explosion the first true diversification occurred on Earth. Prior to this point there was still no vegetation and the oceans had yet to be oxygenated. It is believed that a reduction in the oxygen depleting bacteria lead to the oxygenation of the oceans which lead to the development of hard shelled organisms and an increase in invertebrates as well as…
2004) 1. Alligator mississippiensis of the order Crocodylia and the family Alligatoridae. 2. It is classified a “threatened” species on the US Federal List, despite being listed as ‘lowest risk/of least concern’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species as at 1996 (IUCN 1996a). This is policy decision made because it is similar in appearance to Crocodylus Acutus…
