The feathery golf ball was expensive to make and was easily damaged. The soft feather-stuffed ball was about 7 inches in diameter. However by the middle ages, the game of golf had evolved and a wooden club was used with a smaller ball, that was about 4 inches in diameter. A natural gum from Southeast Asia, known as “gutta percha” made cheaper balls, and were developed in Italy around 1850. The gutty ball went through several transformations. Ball makers use to use a chisel-facial hammer and pound on the ball to make nicks and bruises on the surface of the ball. By the twentieth century, the game of golf changed considerably when B.F. Goodrich company invented a lighter, tightly wound, rubber threaded ball. The invention of the rubber core golf balls changed the game of golf as we knew it. The rubber core golf ball had a solid rubber core, high tension rubber thread wrapped around the core, and a Gutta Percha cover. There are two different kinds of golf balls, a two-piece ball and a three-piece ball. The two-piece golf ball consists of a solid rubber core with a durable thermoplastic cover. The center of a two-piece ball is a blend of several different ingredients, all of which are chemically reactive to give a rubber type compound.
