During the Middle Ages guilds were created to protect the guild members and the consumers. Formed rules and prices for trade so that they performed fair business on all sides. It helped members that were low or middle class to climb to a higher social status. This would allow apprentices who were taught by masters to become masters after going through the ranks. Some families would send their sons at an early age to work as an apprentice so by the time they were adults they would become journeyman or masters. The guild also supported and helped its members by providing aid when needed and cared for family members.
