Poverty has been a consistent problem throughout the history of the world. No matter what the median income, unemployment or overall prosperity level is, there will always be people who are homeless and hungry. Poverty carries many different definitions, but one that truly encompasses all of its effects is, “the unfulfillment of basic human need required to adequately sustain life free from disease, misery, hunger, pain, suffering, hopelessness, and fear.” Despite being on of the most prosperous…
“Eating healthy is also more expensive than eating processed foods loaded with artificial ingredients and sodium.” (Sennebogen) Poverty is a huge problem in the US. Food prices are outrageous, so people can not always afford it. In our country and community, American’s are facing poverty because the necessity foods are more expensive than the unhealthy food people do not want or need to buy. When a human being is brought into the world, it’s first instinct is survival. Because we are creatures of survival, the extremity of lengths we go to measures how much objects, beliefs, and people have influenced us to survive. Some authors have portrayed our lengths of survival to it most authentic forms, such as the Director Philippe Falardeau in,”The Good Lie” and the author Sara Corbett who wrote the eye opening article of “The Lost Boys”. The movie,”The Good Lie”, based on true…
A Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is an organism whose chromosome is altered to appear different than it would originally appear without alteration. When looking at GMO’s, Michael Specter -an American journalist for “The New Yorker”- and Dr. Vandana Shiva -a science scholar- took positions on the topic of GMO’s. Michael Specter’s belief is that if GMO’s are not harmful, there is no true reason for opposing them. On the other hand, Dr. Shiva believes that although GMO’s are not harmful, there…

The situation in Yemen continues to show no improvements. The significant increase of hostilities in the western coast of the country have been alarming since it has been estimated that around 34,000 people have been forced to displace due to the constant fighting, making them flee to safer parts of the region. The problem is that the country in general is facing a humanitarian crisis and while people may move to safer areas the reality is that basic goods such as food and water are already…
Although, each author of the sources used have wonderful points and some experience needed I believe that governments should focus on world hunger by addressing the issue of poverty. Poverty is a huge obstacle and if we do not start somewhere people will continue to suffer. Even if governments just confront hunger in smaller communities or areas then it could help others realize the problem and make them want to make a change for the better. The argument that swayed me was provided by Kathleen…

For my RISE project, I would like to work on hunger in Massachusetts with an additional interest in hunger in children. I first started working with hunger in seventh grade with my advisory. Since then, I’ve taken a new initiative and began volunteering at A Place To Turn during my free time. Last year, I set up a food drive for them and was able to collect over three hundred items of food. This year, I am hoping to continue with these food drives and collection drives on a larger scale. I know…
