    An orange, a round sphere filled with vitamin C. Everyone has eaten one and knows its distinct flavor. Oranges probably do not have much meaning to you; they are just a fruit that tastes good. In “Ode to an Orange” Larry Woiwode describes how an orange brings him to a warm and sunny world when he is stuck in the frozen winters of North Dakota. In life things may seem simple but there is usually more to them. In “Ode to an Orange” it is shown that an orange is more than a fruit; it can make you lie, it is a celebration to open it and it is pure bliss consuming it. An orange is not just a fruit; it has the ability to make you lie. Woiwode states that “their appearance was enough to set my brother and me to thinking that it might be about time to develop an illness” (Woiwode 48). The moment those oranges came through the door the children decided they needed to become sick. The presence of those oranges made them want to lie just so they could get them. Their mom knew right away that they were lying when they said they were getting an illness. They have tried it before and it does not work. The orange has the power to make people lie to get one. He acknowledges that “the matter moved us beyond mere wanting” (48). You do not only want it but you need that fruit. It can make you do anything for it, even lie.
