ancient Greeks. Aristotle made some founding attributions. He devoted six chapters to the consideration of the method of study, the general signs of character, the particular appearances characteristics of the dispositions, of strength and weakness, of genius and stupidity, and so on (“Physiognomy,” 2015, para.4). He made some various statements: large-headed people are unkind, small-faced people were steadfast, broad-faced people are stupid and round-faced people are courageous (Waldorf, 2012, para.3). He also stated that those with thick, bulbous nose are irascible, and that those with large obtuse noses are to be eagle-like and lion-like (“Physiognomy,” 2015). Facial physiognomy resurfaced during the sixteenth century in Europe. Giambattista della Porta then combined physiognomy with alchemical experiments and tried to prove implicit character through empirical observation of physical features (Waldorf, 2012). Then, in eighteenth century, Johann Caspar Lavater, the author of Essays on Physiognomy expounded on how to read facial structure (Waldorf, 2012). He described physiognomy as the science of the relation between external and internal man. He stated that man’s characters are readable and predictable based on his physical features. Many scholars such as Avicenna, Albertus Magnus, John Duns Scotus, and Thomas Aquinas contributed scientific factor to physiognomy (“Physiognomy,” 2015). In the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries, physiognomy was proposed as a means to…

Specifically, I will discuss that the four different awakenings of the princess reveal the evolution of women’s role from child bearing duties to love and female independence. Nevertheless, while Darton focuses primarily on stories passed on by oral tradition, I argue that it is also necessary to examine tales in other forms, such as written literature and recorded films. By examining these versions of Sleeping Beauty, I will reveal the complex and fluid development of women’s role in Western…

Maleficent: changing points of view An adaptation is a retelling of an original text. However, as stated by Linda Hutcheon in her A Theory of Adaptation, the final product (the adaptation) is an entirely autonomous derivation, and its aim is to either keep a story alive, or tell the story in a different way (2006: 9). As most fairy tales, Sleeping Beauty is a straightforward example of reinterpreting a story in order for it to never die. This classic tale has been the source of inspiration for…

In the book “Victorian Transformations: Fairy Tales, Adolescence and the novel of female development” several critics have seen Jane Eyre as a rewriting story of the Cinderella and the beginning of the book especially supports this view. To begin with, Robert K. Martin believes that the Cinderella’s theme is especially apparent in the first chapters of the novel, "as Jane Eyre emphasizes her own position as abandoned child, with evil aunt and two [sic] evil cousins, whose parentage is…

Argument Both Charles Perrault’s short story ‘Little Red Riding Hood` and Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s “The little Red Cap” are fairly tales about a wolf and a young girl. They seem to be one but have continuously changed over a period of time. This can be attributed to the modern adaptations of circumstances and readings. The story was published first by Charles Perrault. The story is of a little girl called Little Red Riding hood. The name originated from the red hooded cloak that she wore.…

Charles Perrault, as I perceive his version of the tale of Red Riding Hood, among other variations of this tale that most of us have heard, is probably one of the first tales introducing a new literary genre. He derives his moral intentions laid out in his story from the pre-existing folk tales taught in a translation to frighteningly prepare readers for the events that commonly were suspected to be taking place. The way it was told by Perrault seems to be less of a gruesome tale, though it was…
