    The Moral Controversy on Using Animal for Research Historically, the health and well being of humans have taken precedent over those of animals’. Only recently have animal “rights” become a major and sometimes controversial topic in the general public. The controversy is inflamed by the fact that it is common practice to use animals for medical research. Different people have many different views on this topic. Is it humane to experiment on animals? Does a life-saving vaccine warrant the pain of a dog or cat that has deliberately been given a disease? Is extending a medical understanding worth the caging and mutilation of an animal? One must consider a variety of different perspectives to come to a reasonable conclusion on the question, should animals be used for medical research? One perspective is represented by national groups such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which fights for animal rights. They assert that animals are a vital part of our history. They believe that animals should be included in the same system of morals that are applied to people. For those people, using an animal for medical research is immoral and unpleasant. Many argue that in doing so, we are violating the animals’ right to life. The people who hold this perspective have been influenced by actions of the federal government. According to the USDA, the Animal Welfare Act was signed into law in 1966. It is the only Federal law in the United States that regulates the treatment…
