He is not likable. He is a violent, abusive thief who does not want to treat Marise with respect due to her lifestyle. 2. Director Fred Niblo did not use many of the flourishes many directors used. He did not keyhole with the camera, and the acting stayed very natural. He really wanted the audience to focus on the characters and their troubles. He used close-ups anytime a character needed to have a strong emotional reaction. If they were suffering, the audience saw it written on Bennett and Navarro’s faces. The tints of a scene were used to reflect the lighting of an area, and Niblo used the idea of light really well. Traditional black and white meant that the character was in the dark in a literal and metaphorical sense. If a character lit a candle or a lamp was shining, the film took a Sepia tone, and if Jean and Marise were in their home village, there was a reddish-pink tint as if to highlight their infatuation with each other. Also, usually light is a positive symbol, but Niblo uses things like lightning or fire or the lamp in Marise’s apartment to focus on harsh reality. It almost hurts both physically and emotionally to look at the truth with that effect. 3.
