One of my favorite childhood shows was Little Bill. In one particular episode, Little Bill goes in search of his special thing. He journeyed through his home, asking his family members what their “things” were. His brother enjoyed playing the violin, his sister excelled at basketball and his father loved to relax to the sound of his favorite jazz tunes. None of those things suited Little Bill and so his wandering continued. He looked inwards and outwards for his just for me thing. This episode sticks with me to this day; like Little Bill I needed to find my just for me thing that set me apart from my family. Or so I thought. My younger brother loves baseball, and my sister adores theater. My older brother is very fond of animals and intends to work with them in the future. But the biggest thing that sets us apart is our behavior in school. While they were overall disinterested, I always needed to be in attendance and always wanted to keep my grades up. Missing a day of school for them was nothing, but for me it was a tragedy. Every once in a while a cringe-worthy story works its way up into the forefront of my mind. During the…

and greater demand for art. Unlike Flanders, whose art was largely religious based, art among the Dutch Republic largely revolved around secular portraits, group portraits, landscapes, and still-lifes. One such example of art in the Dutch Republic, is Frans Hals double portrait, Married Couple in Garden: Portrait of Isaac Massa and Beatrix van der Laen, which commemorates the wedding of Isaac Massa (a famed cartographer/geographer) and Beatrix van der Laen. Unlike earlier wedding portraits,…

To think that I would have a completely different way of thinking about my daily activities from research of a painting of “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by Heironymus Bosch, this painting is a part of our first year read book that is brought up on many occasions by Frans Dee Waal who relates it back to the Bonobos. This painting required much time looking at and much research. To me this painting has made me come to think so much about temptations that we fight in our life, to me as a college…

be beneficial to the community and bring light into the dark world. The night his creation came to life, Victor was regretting his attempt to create life and realized it was a catastrophe solely because the creature’s appearance disgusted him. The scientist became horrified and wanted to escape instead of dealing with the consequences. Per philosopher Sartre, every individual must take responsibility for their action without blaming anyone or anything else and Victor failed to do so. He did not…

animals naturally kill and eat each other. If the hawk does not care about the feelings of the rabbit that it eats, why should humans be any different?” (Stevens 1). Stevens also makes a good point because the human race, like all other species in nature, must place its own interests above the interests of other species. Mankind must ensure that their necessities and livelihood is taken care of before looking after fellow animals. Ed Yong of SeedMagazine.com provides objective research and…

In Frans de Waal’s Ted Talk, “Moral Behavior in Animals” the speaker discusses the concept of morality that is prevalent in animals and how the morality has been tested and identified. First Waal introduces human morality by using an example of a painting by artist, Hieronymus Bosch, titled, “The Garden of Earthly Delights” which conveys an image of humanity prior to its potential downfall. From this painting, Waal contemplates if morality would exist in humans if they had not been interested in…
