consequences after the fact. In addition to the greenhouse gasses that the tar sands create, water pollution is also a primary threat. The barrels of oil that are produced by the industry require 2-4 barrels of fresh water which then produces approximately 1.5 barrels of toxic waste. The toxic waste that is produced is held in tailing ponds and in 2009 tailing ponds covered “130 km2, holding 720 billion liters of toxic waste.” (“No-Tar-Sands”, n.d). This toxic waste consists of naphthenic acids, asphaltenes, lead, mercury, chromium and so forth (Weinhold, 2011). Many studies have indicated that these toxins can be found in high concentrations downstream of the oil sands operations. As a result, residents living near this area such as the Fort Chipewyan community are vulnerable to these toxins because the Athabasca River is a primary source of their water supply (Timoney, 2007). Medical professionals such as Dr. John O’Conner conducted studies in order to call attention to the elevated rates of diseases faced by the community. It was concluded that there were high incidences of “ bile duct cancers (cholangiocarinomas), colon cancers, lymphomas, leukemia, autoimmune diseases such as lupus, thyroid cancers, overactive thyroid and a host of skin rashes.” (Timoney, 2007, p.6). The study raises many concerns to the environmental health of the Alberta residents, and many of the residents express their concerns that the government and oil companies are not doing anything to fix these…
