I loved my Aunt and I cherished her love for me; yet, at that moment my mind was centered upon those snakes crawling across the path. I thought: If I step on a snake in the path or if I accidently grab one while gathering potatoes into the bucket, it will bite me and I’ll die. And, I was afraid of the Screech Owl. I’d never seen him, but his screech alone was enough to cause a young boy’s imagination to go wild. To say the least, I was scared. However, my father had been listening from the other side of the room and just at that moment he said, “Get another bucket, son, and I’ll go with you.” When I realized that I would not be alone, all of that fear went away, immediately.
